What is balanceofpower.site?
This site is intended to track national power capabilities as measured by a number of methodologies including my own. Its focus is on not just the numbers but the qualitative analysis behind them, what do they mean? What does a nation’s capability portend? The goal is to provide an analytical, fact-based look at current geopolitical conditions in the world.
Who am I?
I served in the US Army as a SIGINT Analyst and Arabic linguist, and I’m currently finishing my master’s thesis in International Politics and Military Affairs from the Citadel. I hold a B.A. in History and a B.A. in Political Science. My interest in geopolitics spans four decades, beginning as a military brat living in Germany during the height of the 1980s Cold War. After my military service, I spent three years in the financial industry as an analyst before landing in education, where I’ve taught history (U.S. and World) and English as a Second Language. I have experienced the consequences of geopolitical struggles firsthand through living in Germany and Israel. In international relations, there is no easy answer as to why something is happening, and I hope this website can help make that less scary and counteract the simplification today’s media portrays.
What will I cover?
I’ll analyze current geopolitical events through the lens of national power rankings. Therefore, do not expect to see a lot of analysis of cultural or social events unless they impact the economic or diplomatic situation of a country or organization. I bring a unique perspective through what I have personally witnessed during geopolitically important events, and my education. Expect analysis that digs as deep as I can get while keeping the language accessible to a general audience—complex topics, explained as simply as possible.
Why this matters:
The world order is changing, for those who live through this experience, this can be scary and lead to looking for answers from sometimes questionable sources. I hope to fill a void in this area and help others see the world through the lens of international relations within the balance of power struggle.
